Empire Magazine is the world’s leading film magazine, giving readers insights into the making of our favourite cinema releases, a look behind the scenes and interviews with the stars and directors who bring Hollywood, Bollywood and other centres of cinematography to us at the cinema and indeed our home screens.

The magazine is utterly dependent on photography, and Joanna is responsible for ensuring that only the best images are used in the editorial.  Her responsibilities range from negotiating rights fees, obtaining licences, through sourcing existing images and art directing exclusive shoots for Empire.  She commissions and produce all shoots – including celebrity interview portraiture, reportage stories, live events for Empire Live, Empire Awards, San Diego ComicCon.

Joanna will talk about her work, the challenges it brings and particularly about the process of commissioning photographers – who she chooses, why she chooses them and how she ensures the brief is achieved.

She will also give insights into the use of photography at Shortlist magazine, Men’s Health and Maxim magazines.

The evening promises to be both informative and entertaining, giving us all insights into how photography is created for and used by the popular press.  From a practical point of view, and in keeping with our broad theme of people and portraits, Joanna will speak about creative considerations when taking portraits of stars, celebrities and models.
