Peter Dench is particularly well known for his sideways look at British society. As he says, “I’m always looking for humour in my pictures. Charlie Chaplin is a big influence and I often try to address serious subjects in a humorous way when appropriate. My aim is to make people laugh, make people think. Looking through the books of Elliott Erwitt and Martin Parr is the reason I got into photography. If you can travel the world making people laugh and making them think, then to me that's a fine way to live.”
He is also a presenter, writer, author, educator, curator and Co-Director of Photo North Festival which he juggles with his commercial work in the advertising, editorial, corporate, portraiture fields of image making.
His achievements include: World Press Photo award in the People in the News Stories category and participation in the World Press Joop Masterclass. Football's Hidden Story, a FIFA sponsored reportage comprising 26 stories across 20 different countries, received six global accolades. His books published include: THE DENCH DOZEN: Great Britons of Photography Vol 1; Dench Does Dallas; The British Abroad; A&E: Alcohol & England & England Uncensored.
He currently writes regularly for Amateur Photographer and has been commissioned for the New Yorker, Telegraph magazine and a number of photography journals. Not content with that, his TV presenting credits include: What is it to be English? and Brexit Leavers' Voices Burnley for Channel 4 News UK.
